Empowering Indigenous Peoples with Research For Action

The First Nations Technology Council empowers Indigenous Peoples in British Columbia with practical information to advance digital equity and enablement. By delivering knowledge in ways that meet the needs and preferences of the people we serve, we are helping First Nations communities claim our space in the digital age for future generations.

What is Applied Research?

Applied research focuses on solving practical problems and addressing immediate issues and concerns. It aims to create direct applications for its findings, often offering tangible, actionable solutions. While academic research seeks to advance knowledge through theoretical exploration and understanding, applied research focuses on practical application and solving real-world problems. In alignment with the mandates given to us by the First Nations Leadership Council, our applied research focuses on these areas:

  • Culturally responsive: Respectful and cultural sensitivity guides our research.
  • Participatory design: Collaboratively design and implement technology solutions with communities, ensuring shared ownership.
  • Pilot projects: Implement small-scale projects to test and refine solutions, with regular impact assessments to evaluate outcomes.
  • Knowledge translation: Findings are translated into accessible formats and shared promptly to empower communities to advocate for change and self-determination.
  • Ownership, Control, Access, Possession (OCAP): We respect and adhere to OCAP, and the core principles of data sovereignty drive our research.

By integrating these values and methodologies, the First Nations Technology Council ensures that our research is meaningful, impactful, and aligned with Indigenous Peoples' aspirations.
