First Nations Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence (AI)

We heard from First Nations across British Columbia about the opportunities and barriers of AI and how it's already being used in communities. What we learned is guiding the development of AI resources that support Nation-building.

A Critical Moment for First Nations

AI is moving fast. There is a real risk that First Nations get left behind if this technology is built and used without our leadership.

But when Nations lead, AI can support the work that matters. Strengthening governance. Supporting economic development. Protecting language and culture. Caring for Land and community data.

This is a moment to lead, not catch up.

What We Heard

We heard from First Nations Band Councils and economic development corporations across British Columbia: They shared how they're already exploring AI, while raising clear concerns about data control, capacity, cost, and trust.

These conversations are shaping practical AI resources from the First Nations Technology Council. Tools and guidance that support self-determination now and for future generations.
